Aloha, this is Michael, KH6ML, from the island of Oahu in the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. Today, I’m excited to walk you through our portable solar panel setup, designed specifically to power an emergency email gateway, computers, and radios—perfect for Amateur Radio (or ham radio) communications during emergencies when reliable power is essential. Our setup begins with a large, foldable 400-watt solar panel. We chose this foldable design for its portability and easy storage, making it ideal for quick relocation if our operating area is threatened or compromised. This ensures we can maintain power for our Amateur Radio equipment, no matter where we are. The panel operates at 37.4 volts with a peak output of 400 watts, plus or minus 5%. The open circuit voltage is 45.3 volts, and the system is designed to run efficiently at 12 volts, which is standard for most Amateur Radio setups. The heart of the system is the Epic Power Gate from West Mountain Radio, which manages power distribution. It's connected to a battery charged by the solar panel, and with full sunlight, it can charge the battery in about two hours. This system powers not only the emergency email gateway but also computers and radios, ensuring continuous communication in a disaster. We store everything in a durable box system from Home Depot, specifically the RIDGID portable tool storage system, which is nearly watertight thanks to its gasket. This setup is flexible, allowing for an external power supply if needed, and everything can be broken down into the box for easy transport. It’s light enough to carry or can be placed on a cart for added mobility.
