ENTERTAINMENT DAILY: ENT3- EQUILIBRIUM BTS

(18 Oct 2000) English/Nat STORY: EQUILIBRIUM BTS LOCATION: BERLIN DATE: 30 SEPTEMBER 2000 The brooding architecture of Imperial Germany combines with the stark, ultra modern construction of a 21st century Berlin to form the bleak backdrop for a new film set in a neo-fascist future. APTN were invited onto the Berlin set of EQUILIBRIUM (a working title), in the shadow of the historic Reichstag, to talk to the stars of the film, CHRISTIAN BALE ('American Psycho') and EMILY WATSON ('Breaking the Waves') - teaming up once again following their successful partnership in 'Metroland'. Bale - one of Britain's brightest young talents after his critically praised turn in 'American Psycho' - plays John Preston. He is one of the top enforcers of an oppressive regime where human feeling itself is utterly forbidden, eradicted by a compulsory daily diet of an awesome mood-suppresser called librium. But when Mary (Watson, recently seen in 'Angela's Ashes') a young, female philosopher dares to ask him why he is alive during an interrogation, he is stunned. Preston finds himself unable to get the haunting question out of his mind and ultimately he finds his existence shaken to its very core. Secretly, he begins collecting small, highly illegal nostalgic artefacts, and for the first time in his life, he feels - albeit covertly. Inspired by his new found understanding, Preston determines to turn against the oppressive dictatorship and free the world of its brutal masters. The film is scriptwriter Kurt Wimmer's ('The Thomas Crown Affair') directorial debut and like '1984', 'Brave New World' and 'Fahrenheit 451', dares to contemplate a nightmarish political future which has its origins in the world today.
