Scremerston Northumberland - Disused Railway Colliery Incline + WW2 remains

Scremerston Northumberland - Disused Railway Colliery Incline + WW2 remains Scremerston is on the Northumberland Coast, just south of the town of Berwick-Upon-Tweed. Although the village is small, the surrounding area boasts some fascinating historic relics. We start this explore by looking at some remains from the Scremerston Collieries. Both collieries were served by a tramway which opened in 1815. This travelled from down towards the North Sea and onwards towards the promenade at the nearby port of Spittal. Latterly, the line was connected to the newly opened LNER (now the East Coast Main Line). The wagons would be mostly horse-drawn, with an engine house situation at the top of the short incline section to haul the wagons back up the hill. These days you can walk down (or up) the old incline and tramway. Some reamsins exist today along the path, including remains of the old inclinehoue (engine house) and some stonework from the tramway along the old trackbed. Next we see remains of the many World War 2 (WW2) items in the area. The Spittal Chain Home Low Radar Station was part of the countries early wanring system for incoming aircraft. In an exposed field on top of the hill are shells of two concrete buildings, which formed the station. The main building and a smaller generator house. Now left to deteriorate, these are still accessible to look around - although apart from the old steel window shutters, nothing much remains inside. A short distance up the coast is another WW2 relic. Built on the former site of Scremerston Lime Works is the concrete shell of the gun emplacement/pill box. This imposing gun house looks out of the vast sands at Cocklawburn beach and Cheswick beach - the window still aiming towards any enemy aircraft incoming across the North Sea. We can follow another old tramway incline from the Lime Works down towards the beach and more lime kilns. **Wobbly Runner** Please give the video a like and hit subscribe. My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions. However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few. So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running or walking to my destination.
