It has a long, colorful history of entertaining visitors in Minneapolis for nearly a century. The Walker Art Center is one of the most-visited modern contemporary art museums in the United States. "The Walker Art Center is a gem and the cultural life of the Twin Cities," Walker Art Center Curator Pavel Pys said. The center's history dates back nearly 150 years as a personal art gallery in the home of Minnesota lumber baron T.B. Walker. He wanted to share his collection with the Twin Cities. In 1927, when Walker was among the 10 wealthiest men in the world, he opened the Walker Art Gallery. In 1940, with the support of the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, the Walker Art Gallery became the Walker Art Center. "We have a mid-sized collection of about 13,000 works by 2,300 artists, and the collection, at any point, we have about 3% of the collection on view," Pys said.
