Heavy Events & The Braemar Gathering

A documentary about the history of the Braemar Gathering with a particular focus on the iconic heavy events. The Braemar Gathering is perhaps the most well-known event in the Highland Games circuit. While clan meetings have been held in Braemar since the days of King Malcolm in the 10th century, the gathering has been run in its present form since 1832 and - since 1848 - has been regularly attended by the reigning monarch and members of the royal family. Held on the first Saturday in September, this small highland village welcomes thousands of spectators to a vibrant spectacle of sights and sounds including, amongst others, the massed pipe bands, highland dancing, and athletic events such as the tug of war & the gruelling hill race up Morrone. Perhaps the most iconic spectacle of the Gathering - and that of highland games in general - are the heavy events, where athletes demonstrate their physical prowess and strength across five disciplines: the shot putt; the weight for distance; the hammer; the caber toss; and the weight for height. In this documentary, Kyle Randalls, a well-known competitor on the highland games circuit, discusses the origin of each before providing a practical demonstration of the required techniques.
