Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria

The Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria are a newly developed approach for understanding the dynamic stability characteristics of a ship. They consider five failure modes; parametric rolling, pure loss of stability, excessive acceleration, surf-riding/broaching and the dead ship condition. The criteria were finalised earlier this year at the IMO and they include a tiered approach of increasing complexity. This presentation will introduce the concept of the new criteria, how they have been developed, give an overview and some examples of the failure modes and then discuss the implications for industry.
