Living Abroad in Belize: My 53rd Birthday/A Message to Black Women Leaving the United States

🎶It’s my party and I can preach if I want to…preach if I want to… preach if I want to…🎶 I celebrated my 53rd birthday on March 5th. I recorded this video the day after my celebration. Having been in Belize since November 2021, I felt the need to reflect on how my feelings about living abroad have evolved. There is a movement or trend where Black women are choosing to travel solo and live abroad, and I am proud to be in that number. However, many of us appear to be getting new addresses but keeping old American attitudes about who we are as Black women when in actuality, we have always been a global people! This trend ain’t new! The need to make traveling a thing to compare or compete in order to gain a boost of self-esteem and superiority or to promote brands and sell consumerism while traveling and living abroad is counter productive to our peace and liberation. Too many of us are simply finding a more affordable way to live the same way we lived while in the States. Yet, we are proclaiming and promoting that our international lifestyles and businesses are centered around the polar opposite of America. This video is an attempt at bringing us back to earth. Replacing the exotic, luxurious traveling and living abroad guides and tips with simplicity and common sense rather than just more American practices of branding, commercialism and competition.
