Defining "K" in K-culture: Oxford Univ. Professor on how Korean culture is making waves globally

조지은 옥스퍼드대 교수 "K가 '쿨하다'는 뜻 접두사 됐다" You're watching Global Insight where we speak to experts around the world on issues making headlines. From BTS and Squid Game to kimchi and fried chicken, South Korea's culture has taken the world by storm with K-pop and K-dramas, K-food and K-beauty products. The worldwide appeal of the so-called K-Culture is what may have led to 26 words of Korean origin being added to the Oxford English Dictionary last year. Today, we speak with a scholar who has been at the forefront of bringing K to global culture and defining it for people around the world. I'm joined by Jieun Kiaer, Professor of Korean Linguistics and Senior Research Fellow and Dean of Degrees in Hertford College at the University of Oxford. 1. You are a global authority in the field of languages. What inspired you to pursue the study of linguistics? 2. You added new Korean words to the English dictionary last year. Are Korean words becoming that much more common and recognized by non-Koreans? Are people actually using these words? 3. We’re living in a world where English is regarded the universal language, and the Oxford English Dictionary has a long heritage going back to the late 19th Century. What was the process like for you? Was it tough to get these words into the dictionary? 4. We’re seeing K-Pop, K-dramas, K-food and even K-policies making waves around the world. What do you think K represents to the world? What do you think is the universal appeal? 5. What do you think the Korean language says about Korean people? 6. What are some Korean words that are hardest to express in English, and vice versa? 7. How can South Korea make the Korean Wave a lasting global culture rather than a temporary trend or phenomenon? 8. Could you tell us about your research and your future plans? Jieun Kiaer, Professor of Korean Linguistics and Senior Research Fellow and Dean of Degrees in Hertford College at the University of Oxford.
