Hayes Theatre Co has always been both a development hub for Australian music theatre talent and an engine of new music theatre writing. The Festival of New Work not only gives you the opportunity to see the next big thing in musical theatre, but also creates pathways and connections for artists to progress their own creative journey. Stretching over two jam-packed weeks, the festival had something for everyone. With development showcases, conversations with industry titans, masterclasses, readings, concert presentations, industry networking events, and much more. THE 2 DAY MUSICAL CHALLENGE In this brand new event, a bold group of composers, writers, directors and actors will write, rehearse, and perform a new original work in just 36 hours. Four writers and four composers will turn up with zero preparation to Hayes on Saturday morning, where they’ll be matched up and given a subject for a short musical. Each team spent all of Saturday writing a show, which four directors then staged with four teams of actors during the day on Sunday – rolling straight into the performance that evening.
