B-17 airman stationed in England during WWII with the 390th Bomb Group describing his training and missions. When Widdison turned 18 he registered for the draft and soon after he received a notice that he was to be inducted into the Army. Opting not to stay in the regular army, Widdison enlisted to join the Army Air Corps instead. Widdison was sent to Sheppard Field Texas for his basic training. Because of the need for gunners at the time, Widdison was immediately sent to gunnery school after basic training. After completing his training, Widdison was sent to Lincoln, Nebraska to be assigned to a crew. Widdison would have the ball turret position for crew #27, 569th squadron. The crew meet on the train to Alexandria, Louisiana, where they would conduct their phase training. After the completion of their phase training, the crew were given a B-17 to fly to Scotland. After they arrived in Scotland, the crew were transported to Framlingham to join the 390th Bombing Group. The crew's first mission was in September of 1944. By the end of their tour in January of 1945, the crew had completed 34 combat missions.
