Through the years - Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977)

Charlie Chaplin was an actor, director and writer of both silent and sound movies. He became famous during the 1910s with his character known as the tramp. His succeses continued during the silent film era. After the emergence of synchronised sound in film from 1927 onward, Chaplin was slow to make the transition. Eventually he reached great succes in the medium with The Great Dictator, a spoof of the rise of fascism in Europe. During the 1950s his career went in decline as he was accused of communist sympathies during the era of McCarthyism. Although the character of the tramp never returned, Chaplin still continued to direct movies into his 70s. He died on 25 December 1977 at the age of 88.
