In this episode we do a deep dive on the well known every day herb, sage. Sage has been used for centuries in the culinary world but also as with many herbs in medicine and more poignantly spiritual practice. Sage's use in spiritual practice can be found in everything from Christianity to new age Buddhism, with smudging a common practice to help cleanse the air of unwanted energies amongst a myriad of other uses. Salvia officinalis or common sage is a perennial evergreen shrub, a member of the mint family it produces purple flowers and is native to the mediterranean region. Its musky flavour notes lend its use perfectly to the accompaniment of meat and offal and there perhaps remains no dish I prefer than a thick cut pork chop and crispy sage. Another species of sage however has properties that lend itself more to the mystical and spiritual use of sage. Salvia Divinorum or Diviners Sage, or indeed sage of the ghosts. This is a plant who's psychedelic properties rival that of some of the most potent psychedelics out there. It raises questions as to the very nature of sages use in spiritual practice across the board. If a herb has the power to induce full blown mystical experiences then it is no wonder different members of the sage family are revered in spiritual practice. And so into the cupboard we go, to learn about the psychoactive properties, of sage.
