How to Become a Master of Field Arts (and Lifelong Naturalist)

Join John Muir Laws and his special guest, author and naturalist Roseann Hanson - who is one of the co-organizers of the Wild Wonder Nature Journaling Conference - in a conversation about her newest book, "Master of Field Arts". A lifelong naturalist who can track her budding natural history interests to eight years of age when her father built her a weather station and gave her her first field journal, Roseann has written a book to inspire others to dive deep into the venerable tradition of being a naturalist, explorer, and journaler. We’ll talk cartography, meteorology, wildlife tracking, and so much more—such as creating your own art materials from nature—truly the truest of “place-based” art and investigations. Roseann is is a naturalist, artist, and explorer who has been keeping science-based nature and field notes journals for well over 40 years. She studied journalism and ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona, and has worked in the American Southwest, Mexico, and East Africa as a a guide, journalist, field artist, and conservation program director. She has authored a dozen natural history and outdoor books, including the Southern Arizona Nature Almanac with her husband Jonathan Hanson, and San Pedro River: A Discovery Guide, both of which include her nature journal data and art. Currently she teaches through her own Field Arts Institute, and is coordinator for the trans-disciplinary Art & Science Program at the 117-year-old Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill, part of the University of Arizona. Through the Desert Lab and other institutions she teaches nature writing and nature journaling and field notes for biologists.
