Toccata on Veni Emmanuel

Andrew Carter (b. 1939) is a prolific English composer of contemporary choral and organ music. Set to the tune of ‘O come, O come, Emmanuel’, this fiery toccata is one of his most well-known compositions. The classic Advent hymn, ‘O come, O come, Emmanuel’, is based upon the ancient seven Great "O" Antiphons which are sung before and after the Magnificat at Vespers during the octave before Christmas. The haunting and evocative melody came from a 15th century processional of the French Franciscan nuns. Latin text: Veni, veni Emmanuel! Captivum solve Israel! Qui gemit in exilio, Privatus Dei Filio, Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel nascetur pro te, Israel English translation: O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. Composer: Andrew Carter Organist: Christian Low The 1912 Bevington & Sons organ at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, Singapore
