"Sa Kabukiran" - Filipino Folk Song

"Sa Kabukiran" is a balitaw folk song composed by Manuel Velez during the 1920s. The song has lyrics in Cebuano, Ilonggo, Tagalog, and Spanish. The Tagalog lyrics were by Juan Yee Benasa. The most famous rendition so far was the 1954 recording of singer Sylvia la Torre, popularly known as the "Queen of the Kundiman". Manuel Velez, a prolific prewar composer of popular and movie music, paints a delightful musical picture of life on the farm. The song is written in the key of D and classified as a balitaw in tempo allegretto with a 3/4 beat that undergirds a gay, nimble, and carefree melodic setting for the text. Intended for a coloratura soprano, a fermata before the final measure signals the start of a brilliant cadenza displaying the performer’s vocal artistry.
