North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival

The North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival is back for its fifth year at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre. Equal parts sculpture park, light show, and cultural showcase, this event has attracted over 100,000 visitors in past years. A large reason for the annual excitement is due to it being different each year. "It’s always new—if you came last year (and) you come again this year, it’s completely new displays," said Koka Booth General Manager Taylor Traversari. Koka Booth Partners with Sichuan, China-based Tianyu Arts, and Culture to bring these works to life. The lanterns are designed and built in China, then shipped to the Port of Willington, NC. Once it arrives in Cary, it takes three weeks to build the festival from the ground up. Tianyu event coordinator Yuzhu Jiang describes it as being a part of traditional cultural heritage in China. She believes much of their success in previous years is because of the public in North Carolina who have embraced the event. "The people like our culture, which inspires us in knowing that the people who live here support us…its already become a North Carolina holiday tradition," said Jiang. But it's more than larger-than-life lanterns, as a major part of the festival revolves around a show put on by acrobatic performers who come from across China. It is a circus-style version of Chinese acrobatics that features group acts along with juggling, balancing, and gymnastics. While Tianyu has produced 54 different light festivals in 21 states across the US, the NC Chinese Lantern Festival remains one of their more prominent events, operating for a total of seven weeks. This year’s festival will take place from November 19, 2021, to January 9, 2022.
