Stamford Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Lincolnshire, and around 30 miles east of Leicester, is the town of Stamford. Geographically Stamford is situated along the River Welland at the southernmost part of Lincolnshire in the South Kesteven district. Following the Viking invasions of the 8th and 9th century AD, Stamford was at one point a Danish settlement formed at the shallowest point of the River Welland. It would go on to become one of the five controlling boroughs of the Danelaw. The other four were Lincoln, Nottingham, Leicester and Derby. Stamford prospered under the Normans with an economy based mainly on wool. By the 13th century it was one of the 10 largest towns in England. It had a castle, 14 churches, 2 monastic institutions, and 4 friaries. The castle was demolished in the 15th century and the monastic buildings will have been destroyed during Henry VIII's reign when the Dissolution of the Monasteries occurred. However, as can be seen, several churches remain in the town. Stamford's wool trade went into decline around the 15th century. This is attributed to heavy competition from East Anglia, especially from around the time Flemish weavers moved to Norwich. However, a new industry was taking form in the town - the coaching trade. During the heyday of the horse and carriage, travellers heading north would typically pass through Stamford, requiring an overnight stay. Old Medieval inns were transformed into major nationally renowned hostelries. The coaching trade went into decline with the arrival of the railways. To compound the issue, the East Coast Main Line from London to Edinburgh bypassed Stamford, opting for Peterborough instead (about 12 miles away) in 1850. Losing out on this connection resulted in somewhat stunted growth for the town. However there is a clear upside in that it has been able to retain a great deal of its stone architecture, typically from the Georgian era. There are around 600 listed buildings in the town. Stamford's beautifully preserved architecture has made it a common choice for location shooting for period dramas. In 1994 the BBC produced an adaptation of the 1871 novel Middlemarch by George Eliot, filmed partially in Stamford. The 2005 film adaptation of the 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, starring Keira Knightley, was filmed on location in Stamford, which represented the fictional village of Meryton. Stamford has been named by The Times newspaper as the best place to live in the Midlands in 2021. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
