Of course when I gave birth to her, the situation was already risky and all, but the situation was not critical. When she turned 10 days old, it was Monday. The situation got very bad and they began hitting our village and said we had to leave the village so we fled. The whole way it was bombing and strikes. We drove for 11 hours to reach Sidon." 4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fatima Abdel Nabi, mother of 20-day old, displaced baby: “When I gave birth to her at the hospital, and even on the first night we were admitted to hospital, there were a lot of airstrikes. The hospital in Nabatiyeh was shaking while we were inside. Even before that, when we were in our hometown we heard airstrikes, sonic booms, and we can hear when they hit Aifroun." 6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fatima Abdel Nabi, mother of 20-day-old, displaced baby: “I faced a lot of problems since we've come here. She gets startled by any sound. I had to drive here, and all the while I had to breastfeed her. I had to drive 11 hours. We are five families staying in one place. If she cries, I feel that we are bothering other people. And at the same time, we can’t ask everyone to be quite. Five families and a baby in one room is too much.” 9. Various of displaced people in the school yard 10. Displaced people sitting outside 11. Pan on school turned shelter STORYLINE: Baby Rita lays in her cradle in a class room surrounded by kitchen utensils and personal items. The 20-day-old was displaced with her family following Israeli airstrikes on her hometown in South Lebanon. Fatima Abdul Nabi holds her daughter up and a tattoo on her wrist reads "Rita." When Abdul Nabi gave birth in southern Lebanon, the airstrikes shook the hospital she as in in the city of Nabatieh. Rita turned 10 days old on Sept. 23, when Israel began a widescale bombardment of southern Lebanon. Her mother's village itself was struck by airstrikes. "They began hitting our village and said we had to leave the village so we fled," Abdul Nabi said. It took them 11 hours to get from their village, Qaaqayet al-Jisr, to the coastal city of Sidon, about 40 km (25 mi) away, she said, and "the whole way it was bombing and strikes." Now she and the newborn girl are staying in a room in a school turned into a shelter in Sidon. The child gets startled by any sound, her mother said, and being in a room with five other families does not help. "When she cries, I feel that she's bothering everyone - five families and a baby in one room is too much," Abdul Nabi said. A report issued by Lebanon's crisis response unit Thursday said nearly 1.2 million people are believed to be displaced from their homes in Lebanon as a result of the escalating war between Israel and Hezbollah. Lebanese General Security recorded 256,614 Syrian citizens and 82,264 Lebanese citizens crossing into into Syrian territory between Sept. 23 and 30, the report said. Another 163,600 are living in group shelters in Lebanon.
