Well, in the past, this was not necessary. A table of contents can be a standalone page that helps act as a combination of sitemap and navigation center for a website, but a table of contents for a specific blog post? Outrageous! Back then, and many still do today, blog posts were never long enough that the table of contents was of no value at all. Who needs an index of thousand-word posts? #tableofcontents #wordpress #tutorial Directories become even more valuable for sites like Visualmodo that tend to produce longer and more detailed content. When a guide covers a topic broadly or in depth, it can be helpful to allow users to navigate to the specific part of the article they want to read. Yes, we know. When we marketers write long, in-depth articles, we find that most people don’t read the entire article. The purpose of these longer posts is to bring a small number of different relevant audiences into one place. Instead of writing three different posts on various aspects of the same topic, we combine them into one post that appeals to all three audiences. 3x the traffic - minus the overlap of course - and 3x the backlinks. Great! At least that's my philosophy. I can't speak for Harsh Agrawal or anyone else using the same technology. Maybe they're just naturally long-winded. Anyway, all of this is just to say that when it comes to long blog posts, a good directory goes a long way in helping your audience find the value they want from your article. If your audience doesn't have a hard time finding what they're looking for, they're more likely to stick around to read, follow your blog, or follow a CTA and become new subscribers. Fortunately, creating directories isn't difficult. It's easy even to do it manually, but with the tools I'll mention below. Automatically generate table of contents for your posts, pages, and custom post types by analyzing the content of your headers. The !--nextpage- tag is supported. Support for ranking math plugins.
