On September 23 1941, the germans broke into Peterhof and set fire to the Grand Palace, burnt down the Catherine Palace of Montplaisir and looted the the Hermitage Pavilion..... From this time to the liberation of the Peterhof in January 19, 1944, the palace and surrounding park was systematically destroyed. The English Palace was destroyed to its very foundations and the Chateau de Marly blown up. The Lower Park became a mass of dug-outs and trenches, the avenues just piles of felled trees. Restoration work began almost immediately after liberation. Another year of war lay ahead, but the architects were already drawing up designs for reconstruction. The fountains and the hydraulic system were being repaired, the statues dug up and restored to their former places. The formal opening of the Lower Park took place in June 17, 1945
