On December 27th, having arrived in Emeryville, I boarded Amtrak train #6, the eastbound "California Zephyr" for the trip back to Chicago. Before boarding, however, I was able to witness Amtrak train #11, the southbound "Coast Starlight" stopping in Emeryville, on its approximately 35 hour, 1,377 mile journey from Seattle down to Los Angeles. After the "Coast Starlight" left to continue its journey south, Amtrak train #6, the eastbound "California Zephyr" pulled up to the platform from the yard to begin boarding. We left on-time, at 9:10 am, and despite one minor slow down, for a malfunctioning crossing gate, we managed to maintain our schedule all the way to Reno, even arriving a few minutes early into Reno. On the 236 mile, approximately eight hour run between Emeryville and Reno, the "California Zephyr" calls at Richmond, CA, Martinez, CA, Davis, CA, Sacramento, CA, Roseville, CA, Colfax, CA, and Truckee, CA, running first along the San Pablo Bay, then through the northern end of California's Central Valley, before crossing the Sierras into Nevada via Yuba and Donner Passes.
