If you're not prepared for them, you'll never see them coming, until it's too late. They reproduce very rapidly, reach adulthood in a little over a week, and females can produce their own reproductive partners, ensuring a colony from a single female. Oh, and some produce special overwintering or oversummering females called deutogynes to resist harsh temperature extremes. I'll go over how to account for these adaptations. They travel on wind currents and certain species are documented to use animals like honeybees or aphids to find new hosts. Some live in relative harmony with their host while a select few cause gnarled leaves, colorful galls and even 🌱 extra patches of trichomes 🌱 though sadly they aren't glandular and it isn't a trait of #Aculops #cannabicola the #HempRussetMite. Defending against common transmission routes will be paramount to any good IPM Plan. Just as you might use certain fungi or predatory mites against russets, some species have been used as #biocontrol against invasive plants since the 1970s. Interestingly, certain populations would do better than others, which might also mean there are pest species with differently potent geographic populations which is discussed. Russet Mites (#Eriophyidae and other close relatives) are offshoots of a group of mites, #Nematalycidae, that eat bacteria cell-by-cell in the deep rocky soil where practically no sustenance can be found. They look like stretched-out russets, and diverged really early in the evolution of plants, creating many thousands of specialists which grew with the plant lineages that evolved over millions of years. Conifers and ferns were their first hosts, and then they sharply diversified with flowering plants. I looked over so much russet mite literature across 286 years of documented russet mite history. Despite some really weird evolutionary quirks these are some of most destructive plant parasites!
