Serving as the southern terminus of the Portsmouth Direct Line, this station would be opened in 1876 after the line was extended from Portsmouth Town (Portsmouth and Southsea). The route would be electrified in 1937 by the Southern Railway. Currently, the station sees services from SWR, GWR, and Southern, with ferry services being provided by Wightlink. Nearby is the Hard interchange, with local buses and intercity coach services being provided.
