Confinement recommended to reduce Guinea fowl deaths - Animal Scientist 16

The Head of the Animal Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Dr. Franklin Avornyo, has recommended that young guinea birds should be confined for at least first two months before they reach adulthood. According to him, this will help address the high mortality rate in guinea fowl production in the Northern region.   VO   The guinea fowl industry in the Northern region has over the years been faced with some challenges that have affected its growth. These include lack of balanced feeds, weather conditions, lack of medication and other inputs.   Mostly, the production season for guinea fowls is between April to December during which the Northern region experiences cool weather due to the rains. Unfortunately, when the eggs are hatched the young birds are not able to survive the cold.   It is for this reason that experts are recommending that guinea fowl producers adopt the practice of confinement to reduce the high mortality rate in the sector.   The Head of the Animal Research Institute at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at Nyankpala, Dr. Franklin Avornyo explains the benefits of confinement.   SOT 1: Dr. Franklin Avornyo, Head of Animals Research Institute, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, (CSIR) Nyankpala, Tamale.     VO He said there is the need for balanced feed to enhance the growth of the birds.   SOT 2: Dr. Franklin Avornyo, Head of Animals Research Institute, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, (CSIR), Nyankpala, Tamale.     VO Dr Avornyo further stated that the research institute is on the lookout for cheaper and adaptive methods for guinea fowl farmers so as to enhance their capacity.   SOT 3: Dr. Franklin Avornyo, Head of Animals Research Institute, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, (CSIR), Nyankpala, Tamale.       VO   He also advised that eggs used for incubation should not be kept beyond one week since they are likely to go bad.
