Hymn To Freedom (Voices of Freedom Concert 2018)

Jackie Richardson, Robi Botos, Mike Downes, Larnell Lewis, and the Laura Secord Secondary School Concert Choir perform Oscar Peterson's Hymn To Freedom at Bravo Niagara's 2018 Voices of Freedom concert, curated and hosted by Céline Peterson. "My Dad wrote "Hymn To Freedom" in 1962 during the recording sessions for "Night Train." Norman Granz was encouraging him to write something a little bit different and with a specific feel. Drawing from his upbringing listening to Negro spirituals and baptist hyms, and inspired by the work of Dr. King, a song that was later adapted as an anthem of the Civil Rights Movement was born. With the timeless lyrics (that are just as important and meaningful then as they are now) written by Harriette Hamilton, the Hymn has been adapted by countless artists worldwide. For the Voices of Freedom concert this year, I could think of no better song to close out an evening that was the physical example of singing together in harmony for the sake of freedom. The absolutely dynamic Jackie Richardson joined forces with the strongest trio in our country, Robi Botos, Mike Downes, and Larnell Lewis, to deliver a message that we all need to hear. The 2018 Voices of Freedom concert was presented by Bravo Niagara Festival of the Arts and curated by Artistic Producer Céline Peterson. Taking place on Nov 3/2018, the concert featured performances from Molly Johnson, Jackie Richardson, Robi Botos, Mike Downes Music, Larnell Lewis Music, Joseph Leo Callender, and the Laura Secord Secondary School Concert Choir.
