New Jersey Transit's Infamous Fleet Of Buses : The 2012-2013 Designline ECOCoach CNG Commuter

New Jersey Transit has had a history of doing some odd things with their buses orders, the best example currently is of the NABI 416.15s that are currently in service. But when it comes down to a fleet of buses that have problems across the board, these Designlines took the crown. Back in 2011, NJT made an order for 76 of these buses to replace the 40ft MCI CNGs. MCI did not bid on the contract as far as I know, which is why Designline became the winner. 7202 was delivered in October of 2012 and entered service a day or two after Hurricane Sandy struck the tri-state area. After testing and months of delays, 7204 & 7205 were delivered in April/May of 2013, with 7201, 7206-7214 following suit months after. During their time in service, lots of problems started coming to light. Two of the biggest problems with these buses were that the front door would open at high speeds, and that the driver's dashboard would involuntarily move, which of these became a massive safety hazard. Operators also did not like the transmission on these buses. With the arrival of the new MCI D4500CT CNGs, number series 7278-7361, the 12 Designlines(7202 went back to Designline, 7203 was never delivered) were pulled from service in December 2014/January 2015 and moved to a lot in Jersey City until they can be legally disposed of, as they were paid for with federal funds. These buses have been prematurely retired from service. What you'll see in this video are interior and exterior videos of these buses in service on various Howell Garage routes. These buses were powered by a Cummins ISL-G engine with an interesting transmission choice, the ZF 6AP1700B transmission. I hope you guys enjoyed the video.
