In ancient times, it was renowned for its Oracle of Amun, which hailed Alexander the Great as Son of Ammon during his liberation of Egypt from Persian rule. In the game, Siwa also was the home of the Medjay-turned-Hidden One Bayek during the reigns of the two last Pharaohs of Egypt, Ptolemy XIII, and Cleopatra. Far removed from the center of Egypt, Siwa was more isolated from the culture of the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty than other parts of the country. Consequently, its people continued to hold the Nubian military order of the Medjay in high esteem, heralding Bayek, the last Medjay, as a hero. The Temple of Amun was built during the 6th century BCE, by Pharaoh Amasis II. In February 332 BCE, Siwa was visited by the Makedonian king Alexander the Great to consult the oracle at the Temple of Amun. In the game, in 49 BCE the Order of the Ancients came to the village in search of a vault located beneath the Temple of Amun. It is the tenth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series and the successor to 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Set in Ancient Egypt near the end of the Ptolemaic period (49–43 BC), the story follows a Medjay named Bayek of Siwa and his wife Aya, and explores the origins of the centuries-long conflict between the Hidden Ones—forerunners to the Assassin Brotherhood-who fight for peace by promoting liberty, and The Order of the Ancients—forerunners to the Templar Order—who desire peace through the forced imposition of order.
