The 19th Indiana at Gettysburg | Phil Spaugy

Formed in Indiana 1861, the 19th Indiana was brigaded with the 2nd, 6th and 7th Wisconsin in the Spring of 1862. It became part of the all-western “Black Hat Brigade” or what was soon to be known as the “Iron Brigade” in September of 1862. The name was given to them by General Joseph Hooker at the battle of South Mountain. (The 24th Michigan would join the brigade in the fall of 1862.) Phil Spaugy has been a member of Union Guards, Company A, 19th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry of the North South Skirmish Association (N-SSA) for the last 41 years. During his time as a member, he served on the N-SSA Board of Directors for over 20 years and held the offices of Commander, Midwest region, National Inspector General, National Deputy Commander, Paymaster and from 2013-2016 I had the honor to serve as National Commander of the organization. As a member of the N-SSA, He has live-fired almost every type of firearm issued to both sides during the American Civil War.
