15 June 2019 - Open doors day at the BCL

The Open Day event at the Banque centrale du Luxembourg (BCL), organised on 15 June 2019 under the theme of the 20th anniversary of the euro, was a great success. During this day, more than 1000 people had the opportunity to discover the various fields of competence of the BCL as well as its activities and the history of the euro. The lobby and first floor of the historic BCL headquarters were accessible to the public, who could learn about the Bank's European and national missions through information panels and short educational films. The Governor of the BCL, Mr. Gaston Reinesch, took the opportunity to answer questions from visitors. Visitors were able to enjoy a giant birthday cake specially prepared for the occasion. Mr. Gaston Reinesch, President of the BCL, and Mr. Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister, cut this cake together, which contained lucky charms that allowed visitors to win numismatic products, including gold coins! Visitors were also be able to discover the very rich history of Luxembourg's money thanks to an exceptional exhibition covering the period ranging from John the Blind up to the banknotes issued by the Institut Monétaire Luxembourgeois. Banknotes used in other countries before the introduction of the euro (Deutschmark, French franc, Italian lira, etc.), were also be on display. A workshop on the security features of euro banknotes allowed visitors to discover those security features that are not visible to the naked eye, by using specific equipment. In this context, the processing of banknotes and coins at the BCL was also explained. From 10:00 a.m., the "Euro Wheel" game allowed the luckiest to win many prizes throughout the day. A space especially dedicated to children allowed the youngest to get acquainted with money in a playful way. A bouncy castle and food trucks were installed on the front square to give the public the opportunity to eat and have a good time with their families. The diversity of the program allowed everyone to take part in the celebrations.
