Lois' Simple STORMY SKY Watercolor Landscape Painting Welsh Cottage Watercolour LINE & WASH Tutorial

Support Morgaine on Patreon:   / morgainerose_art   Support Lois on Patreon:   / loisdavidsonart   It's Lois here today, please join me as I paint this dramatic stormy sky scene depicting rain clouds over a Welsh cottage and hillside, looking down at the beach and sea/estuary below, trying to capture the light on the distant water as a way to show off the Welsh cottage with it's slate roof. It's a beginner-friendly painting, line and wash is a very good way to approach learning loose landscape painting in watercolour and a great way to practice drawing and painting techniques. This is a practice piece, so I'm using the back of an old painting. It is a line and wash painting, and I show you how to put in a simple outline in waterproof fine liner which makes it much simpler to then get the loose washes in to bring the simple scen to life. The focus is on painting loose, concentrating on tonal values and suggestion of detail rather than detail itself. It's an impressionistic loose watercolour painting using the wet in wet, then wet on dry methods and really simplifying the scene to create atmosphere rather than the detail. Materials: the back of an old painting on Saunders Waterford 140lb/300gsm rough watercolour paper, 11" by 15"/28cms x 38cms. It is taped to my board and my board is at an angle of about 45 degrees, but I am always prepared to change this if necessary and paint flat, or tip and tilt the board to enable the washes to flow. My colours today are cobalt blue, cerulean, ultramarine, indigo, neutral tint, raw and burnt sienna, cadmium yellow. I use various brushes as shown in the demo, please use any similar brushes you may have and are comfortable with. I use a Pigma Micron .5mm waterproof fine liner for the linework.
