John Adams - Road Movies for violin and piano Augustin Hadelich, violin; Charles Owen, piano Filmed live in concert in Grünwald, Germany, on December 11 2018 Road Movies is all about the joys of driving: the first movement (relaxed groove) is described by Adams as a relaxed drive on a familiar road- with the textures and patterns imitating the feeling of the wheels turning and the car humming along the road. The second movement is slow and meditative - I think of driving on a hot summer day. The violinist has to tune the G string down to F in this movement, and the whole movement is played in "scordatura", which gives the lower register of the violin a languid sound color. The last movement is very fast, more like driving on a highway!
