Le de-essing est un traitement qui, à la base, permet d'atténuer les sybillances d'une voix, c'est à dire certaines consonnes: les S (suintantes) les CH (chuintantes) et les Z. Mais il est aussi possible de l'utiliser sur des sons parfois trop agressifs comme des cymbales, des hihats ou certains instruments (guitares, violons..).
