Tiana Khasi | Why Make Music

Tiana Khasi is a jazz-educated, community-focused singer/songwriter & musician based in Naarm/Melbourne. Drawing on both Samoan and Indian heritage, Tiana puts concepts of home & ancestry at the centre of her work, describing herself as "a bridge person.. doing what she can now, to be a good future ancestor." When she started realising her own music a few years back, she was quickly embraced by global champions like Gilles Peterson & Jamz Supernova, who invited her to travel to London for a Future Bounce showcase. She performed at local festivals including VIVID, Panama, Splendour & Dark MOFO. Over the last few years, she’s been slow-cooking in community and collaboration, recentering her sense of purpose amongst Naarm’s diverse and forward-thinking soul and R&B scenes. Emerging from this transitional state, she’s now sharing new music plus heading to India to perform some shows. Tiana is warm, thoughtful, creative, and I’ve long wanted to get to know her a little better. We talk about family and growing up, we talk about the reality of being a working musician, balancing day jobs and corporate gigs alongside artistic work, and she shared with me why exactly she feels such a clear and strong sense of purpose about the music she’s putting into the world.
