Backpacking 33 miles around the Loowit Trail in 4K | Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument

Join me as I take a two night, three day backpacking trip around Loowit (better known as Mount St. Helens.) Just over 40 years from the day when this mountain erupted you can still landscapes ravaged by pyroclastic flows. Yet, in many areas, you can see the march of nature as it recolonizes the landscape turning it from grey ash laden expanse to a vibrant green oasis. There are even forest with massive old growth trees! This hike is surely one of the most unique I've travelled. I'd put money that this hike covers more ecosystems mile-for-mile than almost any other. THIS HIKE The Loowit Trail is an approximately 27 mile loop that circumnavigates Mount St. Helens. There are several approaches to the trail, the shortest and most popular being from June Lake. I decided to start at Windy Ridge in hopes of finding a little more solitude. Many people trail run the entire trip in a day, however I'm in no shape for that! There are a few considerations to take into account when deciding which trailhead to start at and whether to travel clockwise or counter clockwise: Water availability, the unrelenting lava rock fields and the no camping zone from the South Fork of the Toutle River to Windy Pass. Choose wisely... 0:00 - Good Morning 1:01 - Windy Ridge 2:56 - Bumblebee (Bombus vancouverensis) 3:40 - Plains of Abraham 6:12 - Huckleberry (Vaccinium spp.) 8:52 - June Lake 10:03 - Lava Rock Fields 12:11 - South Fork Toutle River 15:06 - Looking into the crater 15:46 - Spirit Lake SPECIES Bumblebee (Bombus vancouverenis) Hoary Marmot (Marmota caligata) Huckleberry (Vaccinium spp.) Lupine (Lupinus spp.) Subalpine Fir (Abies lasiocarpa) FILMED ON Apple iPhone XR Google Pixel 2XL Joby Gorillapod Filmic Pro App Adobe Premiere Pro RECORDING DATE August 14th, 2020 MUSIC Piano Improvisation 2020 Spring No. 3 - brightwaltz (https://brightwaltz.mystrikingly.com/) Video inspired by: Kraig Adams -    / kraigadams   Oregon Field Guide -    • Oregon Field Guide
