Solstice and Equinox Lecture Series: Professor David Olusoga OBE (6 Nov)

On 6 November Professor David Olusoga OBE gave the Solstice and Equinox Lecture celebrating the reopening of Manchester Museum and discussing the dilemma facing museums in the 21st century. Addressing a sold-out room, he spoke about topics such as repatriation, the value of public museums to society and the role of museums in the British Empire. Around the Autumn Equinox we celebrate new beginnings, and in particular, the reopening of the University’s Manchester Museum following a £15m transformation earlier this year. A brand new two-storey extension has been built as part of the capital development project, and includes a stunning South Asia Gallery, Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery and Exhibition Hall. The Museum’s vision is to become the most inclusive, imaginative and caring museum you might encounter. This event is part of Creative Manchester’s ‘Solstice and Equinox series’, a series of events which brings innovative creative artists to The University of Manchester’s four Cultural Institutions. Each of our unique cultural institutions – the Whitworth, the John Rylands Research Institute and Library, Manchester Museum and Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre – focus on building civic, national and international partnerships to advance the social, environmental and individual wellbeing of our communities.
