Sunday night update on a weaker Marco and a strengthening Laura

Meteorologist Alexandra Cranford has the forecast at 10 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2020. Marco weakened Sunday evening due to wind shear and dry air in the central-northern Gulf. This is a good thing for southeast Louisiana, as it means a lesser wind threat (but still tropical storm force winds of 39 mph or higher across southeast Louisiana). Tropical storm warnings are in effect for the New Orleans area and Northshore. The center of the small storm is in the central-northern Gulf of Mexico. The forecast is for it to skirt the Louisiana coastline on Monday. Some impacts still look likely for south Louisiana starting late Sunday night and lasting through Tuesday. A Flash Flood Watch will be in effect from late Sunday night through Tuesday morning for areas south of Lake Pontchartrain for 3-6 inches of rain. A Storm Surge Warning has been issued from Morgan City, Louisiana to Ocean Springs, Miss. as well as Lake Borgne. There is a potential for a 3-5' surge along most of the coast from Grand Isle to the Mississippi coast. A surge of 4-6' is forecast for Grand Isle to Morgan City. A surge of 2-4' is forecast for areas west of Grand Isle as well as for Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas. Tropical storm force winds are possible by Monday morning. Some of the higher gusts could knock down trees or power lines. A few tornadoes will be possible on the eastern side of the storm on Monday. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of our area including New Orleans and the Northshore at a 'slight' risk of severe weather (level 2 of 5). Sunday night will bring some passing showers and downpours, but the main impacts as far as rain, wind and surge will be Monday. While some of the effects will ease on Tuesday, we'll then likely have Tropical Storm Laura entering the Gulf behind Marco. Laura could bring more rain, wind, and storm surge although there is still some uncertainty in its track.
