Wild Cave Exploration: Sinks of Gandy, West Virginia

[drone video begins at 7:52] Video shows ground, interior, and aerial views of the Sinks of Gandy near Osceola, Randolph County, West Virginia. We entered at the upstream or southern entrance and hiked in about 1/4 mile in before returning to the starting place. Despite what some claim, the Sinks (particularly the southern entrance shown) are extremely easy to find. From State Route 33 from Elkins, turn at the Rich Mountain Road (county route 3/1). Once at bottom of mountain, stay right onto Whitmer Road (county route 29). Then turn right onto Dry Fork Road (county route 40) which will take you to the gate shown at the beginning of the video (which is right at the end of a 180 degree turn). In all, from the Rich Mountain Road turnoff from State Route 33, you will travel 16 miles, the last half of which is dirt/gravel (when you see road/private signs for Osceola, you are very close; just go past Osceola until you see the gate and there is a parking area just past the gate). Most of the route is one lane except for a few miles. If coming from Seneca Rocks on State Route 33, turn left onto Whitmer Road (29), stay on Whitmer until you make the right onto Dry Fork (40) [the total mileage will be similar]. Do yourself a favor, use a "google earth" view searching for either Osceola or the Sinks, so that you will be familiar with the road and the fields to look for in conjunction with the drone footage in this video. It is a short 1/4 hike from the road to the southern entrance; if you go all the way through to the northern entrance, it is only a 1/3 mile hike back. The drone footage basically follows the path from the road to the Sinks and back.
