Master Clocks are GPS synchronized. Many PTP clocks also have an IRIG output. Description of a typical PTP network with a grandmaster clock, ordinary clocks, slave clocks (relay, merging unit, DFR, IED), boundary clocks and transparent clocks. Explanation of how the timestamp is received at the Ethernet physical layer, goes into the FPGA to be compensated for delay and latency. PTP uses hardware based timestamp is handled at the physical port while software based timestamp is handled at the CPU. The PTP environment is very contained typically within a single substation so the network is very small. There is a limit of 16 switch hops in the precision time protocol standard. If more hops are required, an additional master clock is required. Narrated by iS5 Communications' Field Application Engineer Dominic Iadonisi.
