The Music of Phyrexia: All Will be One | Magic the Gathering

To celebrate the release of Phyrexia: All Will be One, I set out to write a track significantly different than my previous MtG music work: my aim here was to capture a sense of place for Phyrexia, and in doing so, reflect its strange, twisted, and beautiful horror. I avoided using any natural or organic sounds, and where I did use them (such as choirs), they've been distinctly altered, representing the assimilation of flesh with machine. While the Phyrexians are creatures of fear and nightmares, I wanted to also ensure an element of otherworldly beauty was present as well: to me, that balance sits at the crux of understanding aesthetic and setting for Phyrexia. For the more musically-minded, you'll hear the time signature of 9/8 come through during certain portions of the track (chosen to reflect the 9 Spheres of Phyrexia). Structurally, the track is also broken up into five segments, to match the Praetors. The central Phyrexian / Elesh Norn Theme (first heard at 1:08) is built around Perfect Fifths, for obvious reasons: these broad, harmonic intervals also help deliver that sense of beauty while the instrumentation and other intervals and harmonies maintain the ethereal and sinister. #phyrexia #magicthegathering #music #phyrexiaallwillbeone Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/69uqQ...
