Allegro Vivace (raaga: Gauri) Walter Kaufmann was born in Karlsbad, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) to a Jewish family in 1907. Although his career as a composer had taken off in Europe, with the growing strength of Hitler’s National Socialism, Kaufmann began to explore ways of escaping his homeland. With a foundational interest in Indian culture and music, he fled Europe for Mumbai, India in the early 1930s. There, he dove into learning Indian music, and composed many pieces which synthesize Indian and Western music. Taking Kaufmann’s Sonata as a foundation, I have added raaga embellishment and improvisation throughout the Sonata. I hope you enjoy! #indianfusion #indianmusic #violin #piano #sonata
