This tutorial involves both wet felting and needle felting. I adore Ghibli's Totoro and am an avid consumer of Totoro products. However this is simply my own interpretation of Totoro as a coin purse. It is in no way affiliated with Studio Ghibli and must not be confused as an official Studio Ghibli representation. I am in no way affiliated with Studio Ghibli... just a fan!! This involves both wet felting and needle felting. I learned about this coin purse technique through a Japanese needle felting/wet felting coin purse kit that I purchased at my local craft store. However, my daughter ended up getting her hands on the wool from the kit and pretty much ripping it up into pieces, which as you can see from my tutorial, doesn’t work well and will end up in a lot of extra work. So I decided to use some of the wool I had on hand to make these kawaii Totoro coin purses! Do you guys prefer wet felting or needle felting? I haven’t done a whole lot of wet felting but I think I’m going to do more of this in the future. I like wet felting because it’s a little faster than needle felting (minus the drying time). It also results in a smoother product and isn’t as labor intensive as needle felting. AND you don’t risk stabbing yourself with the needle! This is a collaboration with Ocha Drop! Supplies: 5-7 grams of gray or blue wool 2 grams of white wool less than 0.5 grams of black wool felting pen felting needle felting mat coin purse frame awl hot water liquid soap sewing needle & thread or glue depending on your coin purse frame black plastic eyes A styrofoam ball that fits your coin purse frame snugly A disappearing ink pen or pencil small scissors Difficulty Level: Advanced Beginner FAQ: What is Wet Felting? Wet felting is a method used to create felt from wool and other animal fibres. Warm soapy water is applied to layers of wool placed at 90 degree angles to one another. Repeated agitation and compression causes the fibres to hook together into a single piece of fabric. Sheets of felt can then be cut, embroidered into and manipulated into whatever your design requires, or even act as a base to be needle felted into. What supplies are needed? Wool roving, soap, hot water, a tray, a large bowl, and tulle, What is a resist? A Resist is a barrier which keeps fibers from sticking together. A resist is commonly needed to make items such as purses or bowls, or anything else that will later become three dimensional. A resist can be made of cardboard, plastic, styrofoam, or any other firm material.
