Classic car enthusiasts usually go through a driving season of two or four months and then store the car for eight to ten months. Or maybe you have a home up north and move south for the winter. Whether you need to store a classic antique, a daily driver, a rare muscle car or a million dollar exotic car, know the facts! Each car is unique with different care requirements. Don't use a "one size fits all" approach if you're storing outside your home. Instead, take your vehicle to someone who understands your car's needs in addition to YOUR needs! Considerations: One thing to consider is climate control; it cuts down on drastic temperature changes from high to low. A consistent temperature is key during storage because moisture is bad for any automobile. Security is a concern as well. Is there some form of security system protecting your vehicle? Also is there a backup system in place in case the first deterrent fails? If you own an old car without a computer vs. a new model with sensors, consider a "battery tender." If you disconnect a newer car battery it can lead to problems and monitors having to be reset. A car cover is a personal preference, depending on the location of storage and amount of dust or activity in the storage area. There are also different types of car cover fabrics to research. Never use a regular car cover during transit to the storage, it will move around and potentially scratch the finish. As for tires, check the tire inflation levels. Place the chassis on blocks or move the vehicle often if the car is going to sit for a long time so you don't flat spot or destroy the tire. Most newer cars are equipped with advanced technology tires that don't cause concern about flat spots as much antique cars and thinner tires. If you decide to store your automobile at a neighbor's barn, an in-laws garage, or the friend of a friend who has a warehouse, be sure to check with your insurance company before taking them up on the offer. Most insurance companies require an alternate garaging supplement to be filled out or you may not be covered in the unlikely event of an incident.
