You control Mario on quest to save Pauline from Donkey Kong. To do this he must make his way up the construction site while jumping over DK's barrels. (There are some places where you cannot jump!) He must make sure to switch on the crane (by pressing left once he is at the on/off switch) and jump at the crane when it is swinging the farthest left. Mario will take one of the four chains off of DK's platform, the platform will weaken. If he does this 4 times, the platform breaks apart and DK will fall, freeing Pauline from DK's clutches. The game then starts over only getting harder. If Mario hits a barrel or an iron bar while jumping or climbing, he will lose a life. An extra life is gained at 300 points. (If there were no lives lost, the points are doubled until you lose a life.) In Game A, iron bars don't appear until the player reaches somewhere around 100 points. In Game B, the iron bars appear as soon as you start the game.
