How to Learn the Continental Grip in Tennis

The continental grip is very well known but seldom understood, especially at the recreational level. In this video we discuss exactly how to measure whether the continental grip you have is accurate and fully functional or whether you have some limitations. And, if you do, you will learn how to make your own diagnosis and corrections. First of all, the continental grip is the tennis grip to slice, dink, lob, serve, volley, and play almost all defensive shots with. The only limitation is this grip makes it hard to hit much topspin. What happens with people who think they have the continental grip but in fact don't? One common problem is when players serve and in the middle of their motion they switch from the continental grip to serving with a forehand grip and then adopt "push" motion that really has severe limitations! Next, as far as a continental grip on the volley is concerned, the problem arises when players change their grip between their forehand and backhand volleys. The benefit of the continental grip on the volley in tennis is that it gives you an equally open racket face on both sides for your forehand and backhand volleys. The video then moves to some exercises that you can use to find the right grip and then to practice it. The point is that it may take a little time and practice to reinforce the feel that will really help you feel comfortable with a great continental grip. There are several standard methods that people are taught as to how to find the continental grip. One is the palm side of the index finger knuckle. This spot is supposed to line up with this upper right hand bevel of the racquet grip. While that may be easy enough, the instruction that this will give you a continental grip is not correct. It can give you a continental grip but not necessarily. You need to use a combination of the correct placement of the inside of that index finger knuckle along with the correction placement of the heel of the hand. The video clarifies these differences and then moves to ways you can test if the continental grip is really working for you. One way is to create underspin a ball and see if you can hit equal amounts of backspin with your forehand and backhand volley. You can even try this with a choked up grip to make it easier to start. The next level could be instead of just alternating forehand and backhand self-volleys, try a "spin, tap" combo as demonstrated in the video. The final part of this tennis instructional clip will help if you are still struggling with the grip. If for example you are changing the grip on your serve in mid-swing, then you will need to hold that grip down but not too tight! After all, there's only one muscle that you're releasing -- it's the thumb muscle! So if you can hold that thumb down you'll find that you're not going to be sliding that grip over in the middle of your service motion anymore. If you have trouble just holding it, you can hold it down with your third finger. Another way to lock you're grip in until you get a better feel for it is if you have an old grip and an old glove and some glue. Just slide your hand into the glove, put some glue on it and grab your racket! The glove will be stuck to the racquet with the correct grip! A third way is to use masking tape around your hand and around the grip to get a better feel for it. A fourth way is by using one of our products, a training aid called the Grip Doctor. You can look it up on our website www.OnCourtOffCourt.com. Yet, a fifth way is through doing these exercises shared in this video and checking that you have an equal amount of spin on both forehand and backhand volleys.
