http://www.edibleacres.org Juan shows us a simple and reliable way to check if Hazelnuts are ready for harvesting. In this example we are looking at American Hazelnut plants. They can be a bit tricky because often their husks are quite large and cover the nuts, making it hard to see whats happening. If you wait too long, many of the nuts can fall to the ground or be taken by squirrels and birds. If you get them way too early they may never fully develop flavor or ripen viable seed and they won't come free from the husk even when dry.
