Liver Pain? - Right upper abdominal pain. Right upper quadrant pain

Right side upper abdominal pain is common. You might experience different kinds of pain. Most of the time, pain in your abdomen is minor and simply a discomfort. But sometimes, it can be serious and even medically emergency. Right side upper abdominal pain, Medically is called Right Upper Quadrant Pain. The organs are located within Right upper quadrant: Liver, Gallbladder, Part of the pancreas, Large and small bowels, and right Kidney. Among them, liver is most massive, that’s why many people think about liver pain, when they feel right-side upper abdominal pain. The truth is, that most commonly it is not liver pain. Moreover Liver itself doesn’t actually contain any nerves that sense pain, so discomfort is usually the result of inflammation or damage to surrounding tissues. So, what is the most common cause of pain in upper right abdominal area? If pain is mild it can be Indigestion (dyspepsia) and bloating. Indigestion is a condition of impaired digestion. Symptoms may include upper abdominal fullness, heartburn, nausea, belching, or upper abdominal pain. The treatment of indigestion is proton-pump inhibitors, H2-receptor antagonists. Also antacids and prokinetic agents can be used. Also lifestyle modification, like diet and exercise. Another most frequent cause of right upper quadrant pain is gallstones. Typical characteristics of gallstone attack pains is colic like pain, which means, form of pain that starts and stops abruptly. The pain steadily increases for approximately 30 minutes to several hours. A person may also experience referred pain right shoulder. Often, attacks occur after a particularly fatty meal and almost always happen at night, and after drinking. Treatment of gallstones is surgical removal of gallbladder. Called Cholecystectomy. The lack of a gallbladder has no negative consequences in most people, however 10 to 15% of people develop postcholecystectomy syndrome, which may cause nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, and episodes of abdominal pain. But it is possible to prevent gallstone formation before it happens. Maintaining a healthy weight by getting sufficient exercise, and eating a healthy diet, that is high in fiber may help prevent gallstone formation. Ursodeoxycholic acid appears to prevent formation of gallstones during weight loss. A high fat diet during weight loss also appears to prevent gallstones. Duodenal ulcer. Pain typically comes on a couple of hours after eating and may be improved by taking antacids. The level of pain can gradually build up over time, eventually becoming severe and may be associated with bringing up (vomiting) blood. Or blood in the stool. This is an emergency situation, and you should call an ambulance, to go directly to hospital as soon as possible. Liver Problems, Less common. Chemosis, hepatitis, cysts in the liver, abscess and cancer can cause liver pain. Longer-term conditions such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis can give rise to pain anywhere in the tummy at times. They usually cause loose stools, sometimes with blood. The Right upper quadrant pain is not a common place for pain in irritable bowel syndrome, but in some people it may occur. Pain is usually on and off and accompanied by bloating and diarrhea. Depending on the organ and the condition, sometimes these can be serious. Abdominal pain is one of the most common reasons for emergency department visits. Incidence is around 10–12 % globally.
