Mannar, in Sri Lanka, is more beautiful than it at once appears. Here's a bit of it. A closer look at the Mannar beaches, Palmyrah groves, dunes, thorn scrub jungles, lagoons, lakes, farmlands, and the life connected to them would reveal the real Mannar. Well known for thousands of migratory birds, famously including flamingos, the island of Mannar which contains an international RAMSAR wetland, may be facing a perilous future owing to a controversial sand mining for its rich titanium deposits by an Australian company. The unique habitats, life, and whatever other heritage of Mannar may be at risk. Unless 'dangerous' development moves are halted, the so called arid yet beautiful Mannar as we know it, would be history; may even become a textbook case for wide ranging ecological disaster!
