The U.S. military is shifting its training focus from desert environments to the jungle terrain of the Indo-Pacific region in preparation for potential conflicts with China. In Okinawa, Japan, the U.S. Marine Corps' Camp Gonsalves is home to the Jungle Warfare Training Center (JWTC), known as the world's toughest facility. To strengthen jungle warfare skills, the U.S. Marines, along with joint forces, Japanese forces, and allied forces, trained approximately 14,000 personnel at the JWTC in 2022 and about 16,000 in 2023. The JWTC offers training courses that cover essential skills such as jungle survival, fieldcraft, small unit tactics, navigation, and jungle combat.
