PM Modi Warns Against 'Digital Arrest' Scam: Indians Lost ₹120 Crore in Just 3 Months| Mann Ki Baat

Digital arrests have lately emerged as a menace across India. Recently, Vardhman Group chairman SP Oswal was duped by cyber criminals into transferring ₹7 crore to their bank accounts after he was taken into “digital custody”. The fraudsters posed as CBI officials. They kept him under “digital surveillance for two days via Skype” as a “suspect in a money-laundering case”. Now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a warning on the rise of digital arrests in the country. In his latest Mann Ki Baat Address PM Modi explained what the digital arrest scam is. So what are digital arrests? Digital arrest fraud involves scammers posing as officials from investigative agencies or law enforcement bodies, such as the CBI, Narcotics Bureau, RBI, customs, or tax authorities. The fraudsters target innocent civilians via audio or video calls, using intimidation to extort money while keeping them confined in their own homes under the pretense of an ‘arrest.’ In a digital arrest, victims are coerced into remaining visible on video platforms like Skype or other conferencing tools until they comply with the scammers' demands. The fraudsters typically allege that the victim is implicated in criminal activity, such as receiving a parcel with illegal items like drugs or forged IDs, or that their phone has been used for unlawful activities. Often, these criminals even set up realistic backgrounds that mimic police stations or government offices and wear uniforms to appear more credible. Such is the frequency and intensity of these arrests that, according to recent government data, Indians lost approximately Rs 120 crore to ‘digital arrest’ fraud in the first quarter of 2024. Apart from digital arrests, Indians lost Rs 1,420.48 crore to trading scams, Rs 222.58 crore in investment scams, and Rs 13.23 crore in romance scams. The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal recorded 0.74 million complaints between January 1 and April 30 this year, following 1.5 million complaints logged in 2023. In 2022, 0.96 million complaints were filed, significantly increasing from the 0.45 million recorded in 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned the nation on Sunday against the 'digital arrest' fraud and said no government agencies threaten people over the phone and demand money. PM Modi, while detailing the modus operadi said that victims of digital arrest are from all sections and ages. The first step in the fraud is collection of your personal information. 2nd Step is the atmosphere of fear. The scamsters will scare you so much that you won’t even be able to think. Step three is the time pressure. If you ever get a call like this, don’t be afraid and know that no investigating agency does such an interrogation over the phone or video call. PM Modi detailed the 3 steps of digital security- stop, think, and take action. If possible, take a screenshot and do the recording. Modi asked people to dial 1930 to connect with the national cyber helpline. He said such attempts should also be reported to the police ...............................................................................................
