One of the hobbies I've become engrossed in during the last few years is game design, specifically board game design. As part of a recent project, I needed to assign a unique effect to each of the four playing card suits. Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, and Clubs. Ones that were mechanically balanced, but that also maintained the spirit of their historical identities. That led me back to my own research on the history of playing card suits.
